Aging

Blog posts related to aging have a strong primary focus on two areas of interest: how we deal with growing old, and how we deal with the world of work as it relates to the prospect of dropping out or staying in the workforce. These posts are the early outlines of George’s in-process book, tentatively titled “What’s Your Place?” How R U Aging? LOOKING INTO THE QUESTION OF “IF NOT NOW, WHEN?” & MORE Mulling through a fairly deep reevaluation/reflection phase that has been over-occupying my thoughts and generating an “Inner Push” to do more, not less. Aging, Unretirement & Place WORKING INSTEAD OF RETIRING CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH & WELL-BEING Overall, there’s plenty to scrutinize and act on, both politically and socially, to ensure that the aging  boomer generation gets the support they need to keep working productively. Are You a Hippie, Square or Activist? A POST-MIDLIFE REEVALUATION The short-lived Hippie movement proved to be an enlightening and interesting pathway more closely attuned to my overall presence. Hippies, in my mind, were the generation who had it right with their “eagerness to give political dignity to the tenderer emotions, in their readiness to talk openly of love, and non-violence, and pity,” wrote Theodore Roszak in “The Making of a Counter Culture: Reflections of the Technocratic Society and Its Youthful Opposition,” first published in 1971. Our Increased Dependence on Others LONGEVITY’S IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE Longer life spans signify that we will extend our work lives as well as increasingly draw from the social security government trust and from other social and economic resources. How will this affect our nation’s labor force in the relative near term?

Looking deep into the nature of things, being introspective, and examining metaphysics, for instance, can bring discomfort and confusion.  The emphasis here, however, is on contemplation and the rough path of trying to discover meaning in what often seems to be a meaningless world. Answering Durant’s Question WHAT GIVES YOU MEANING? “Spare me a moment to tell me what meaning life has for you, what keeps you going, what help – if any – religion gives you, what are the sources of your inspiration and your energy, what is the goal or motive-force of your toil, where you find your consolations and your happiness, where, in the last resort, your treasure lies.” Retrogression AN INTERESTING WORD THAT COMES WITH A STORY Today, during the early decades of the 21st century, American society is retrogressing. Don’t Forget to Look Up THE PROCESS OF TAKING A DEEPER LOOK INSIDE AND OUT IN SEARCH OF AUTHENTICITY With this once-again closer examination into how to present myself online (you’d think I’d have this down by now but I obviously do not), I came to the realization that I need to really be more of myself, to be more vulnerable. So I started with the basic question of what I truly believe about life. What is my inner spirituality? What does my soul say to me? The Rhythms of History and End of Us IS GREAT TRAJEDY ON THE NEAR HORIZON? “Is there some disaster lingering in our own future, as unimagined from our current perspective as machine guns and trenches were a century ago? We should worry about the day we might face a Melian choice of our own, when some general or infomanagerial despot—or some clicking computer—shows up, unwelcome, and says to us: It should be obvious that you are merely a node and that I control the network.”

In General

Many of the things I write about are difficult to slot into a very specfic categories. The abstracts below cover a wide variety of topics. A Revolutionary Re-Adjustment THE AMERICAN WORKFORCE IS CHANGING RAPIDLY AT A SPEED THAT IS DIFFICULT TO KEEP PACE WITH The middle class is shrinking as the vast gap between the haves and have-nots grows wider. It is commonly noted today that more than 100 million people in the U.S. are either poor or classified as low-income workers. Give Peace a Chance Again ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BRINGING BACK THE ICONIC PEACE SYMBOL Perhaps another kind of peace movement needs to start taking shape – one that can be an antidote to the great dismay and sadness many of us feel because of Trump’s shallow behavior; his overall governing ignorance; and his penchant for sowing divisiveness, chaos, and fear instead of using these times as a great opportunity to bring everyone together. On Nordic and American Millenials DO NORDIC MILLENIALS ENJOY BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS? In any discussion of quality-of-life policies, Nordic countries inevitably come up. For many years, countries like Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden have been held up as examples of near utopian societies where citizens enjoy free health care, free college educations, lengthy paid parental leave, and a secure retirement. But how true is this? How Multiple Passions Can Be Liberating MANY QUIT THEIR JOBS AND BECOME FREELANCERS About people who simply cannot work in only one arena and have multiple passions they might dive into with extraordinary zeal, often temporarily until their interests focus elsewhere. Or they have numerous finely tuned skills and hobbies, like the coworker who writes, designs, illustrates, takes photos, is a musician on the side, has a boat and motorcycle in the garage, and teaches yoga on the weekends.
