It is difficult for me to describe this category of my writing.  Dictionary.com defines essay as “a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative.” The word literary, as in literary man or literary woman, also defined at Dictionary.com, means “someone engaged in or having the profession of literature or writing.” Essays are listed here in no particular order, and most have been written over a recent period crossing over about two to three years, and I am still working on a variety of new ones that I post here as I complete them.  Abstracts below link to the “by George” WordPress blog, where comments/feedback are always welcome.

RUMINATING ON OTIUM The central motif of transcending societal distractions that comes with Otium is consistent philosophically with another esoteric word —gerotranscendence— that also relates strongly to how some people spend their retirement years.  READ

ON WORK & LEISURE A prevailing school of thought posits that spending too much time in such leisurely pursuits is unhealthy – that instead we should continue to work well into our seventies and eighties, be it part- time or even full-time.  READ
AGING & NOTIONS ABOUT THE PAST As I have noted in earlier posts, I am going through a period in my early 60s in which memories of the past keep coming up in vivid pictures, resulting in a profound reevaluation of who I was, who I am now, and how I plan on spending the rest of my days on the planet. READ
ANSWERING DURANT’S QUESTION “Spare me a moment to tell me what meaning life has for you, what keeps you going, what help – if any – religion gives you, what are the sources of your inspiration and your energy, what is the goal or motive-force of your toil, where you find your consolations and your happiness, where, in the last resort, your treasure lies.”  READ
OUR WORLD & WHY YOU ARE HERE Here we exist as masters of our fate, as masters of our environment, no longer listening intently for the stampede of Buffalos rumbling the ground, coming from some far-off place about to disrupt our very essence. READ
AGING, UNRETIREMENT & PLACE I have been writing about plenty of different things these days, one of which deals with reflecting on people such as myself, who are retirement- aged, low-income individuals active and still swinging the bat.   READ
HOW R U AGING? At 63, I find myself mulling through a fairly deep reevaluation/reflection phase that has been over-occupying my thoughts for a good six months now. I’m feeling an Inner Push to do more, not less.  READ
