An Exploration into Meaning,

Purpose & Learning

The early twenty-first century is an astounding period of time in which almost all the literature and art, at every turn, in the sciences, in the humanities, and in the highly astute and creative realms of time immemorial, are parked in digital form, easily accessible through our fingertips. In today’s Digital Age, we can adapt ourselves to becoming freewheeling self-learners (autodidacts), roaming through the history and discoveries of time, in any direction, for as long as we desire, online and through dialogue with others. I generally, and very broadly speaking, call this the Quest to Understand XYZ, meaning learning about anything and everything you find worthy of your interest. At the same time, with this overabundance of information, things have become more complex, requiring that we further develop our critical thinking skills and not get caught up in the oversupply of misinformation and lies that confront us daily. Much has been written about this challenge we face today. Many erudite professionals in the fields of information and digital literacy offer sound advice on how to find truth and meaning in this digital wasteland, in this clash of misinformation. As a journalist I try to apply the Five Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and Silent H (How) to everything I discover online, in the books, reports and articles I read in both hard-copy and on my overloaded Kindle, and in the interviews I conduct with knowledgeable people. I then synthesize and share what I learn on the “by George” blog.  Additionally, in the spirit of transparency and complete honesty, I tell some personal stories.  The highly esteemed editor Harold Evans, author of “Do I Make Myself Clear? Why Writing Well Matters,” noted that “the digital era might have offered a vision of a universe of honest exchanges in search of mutual understanding. It didn’t happen.”  While Evans makes a strong and sensible point, UnderstandingXYZ is on a path to weaken and ultimtely disprove that ominous trend.  The overriding, simply stated goal is to obtain a better understanding of XYZ, share what I learn, and, in the process, help you know more. - George Lorenzo
